An Introduction to BSA Norwich

Hi everyone!

My name's Sam Rowe (@samfrowe on Twitter) and I'm a PhD student working at the University of East Anglia. I'm also Communications Officer for the new branch of the British Science Association in Norwich so decided to make a blog to highlight the fantastic science going on in the city. :)

The blog will cover our recent events, the lives of scientists working in the local area, and general discussions about science in society. For our first post, I thought it would be great to describe what the new branch is all about and let you know who is on the committee.

The basics...

The British Science Association (BSA) is a charity organisation set up to help the development and promotion of science. The main headquarters are in London but there are loads of local branches all over the country.

The Norwich branch is still young - it was only founded in Autumn 2016. Over the course of the year, we'll be planning science-themed events in and around Norwich which are open for everybody to attend.

The events could be anything from quizzes and competitions to treasure hunts and mini-festivals. They'll be designed to make science accessible for everyone and we're keen to show how science affects our everyday lives and the world around us.

Importantly, we believe that science profits from diversity and should be inclusive for all types of people regardless of their background!

Who we are...

A few weeks ago we formed a committee with eight members. Although we've been assigned formal roles, the branch is run entirely by volunteers and wouldn't be the same without the valuable input from people living in the local region. So if you ever have ideas and suggestions for events or would like to volunteer then please get in touch!

The committee members are (from left to right):

Amy Easey (Publicity)
Freya Varden (Chair)
Hannah Langlands (Treasurer)
Michael Norman (Publicity)
Sam Rowe (Communications)
Rebecca Tatum (Secretary)

Kayla Robinson (Design)

Josie Maidment (Treasurer)

Over the next few weeks we'll be releasing a series of blog posts called Meet the CommitteeThis will give each committee member the chance to talk about who they are and what their role is. Although many of us are scientists, we aren't defined by our jobs and have a huge range of interests that we pursue in our spare time. :)

We're all really excited to be involved with the BSA and can't wait to start planning events!

If you have any thoughts or feedback regarding events, social media activity and blog posts from BSA Norwich then we'd love to hear from you. Also, please get in contact if you'd like to volunteer. Thanks!
